Feedback

I was hoping to feel good about my supposed last layer of the print... (I was going to add one more bug by my head) .instead I feel bad  because of some feedback I got from a professor. She thought that the bugs in the background look like an afterthought, and that the print could be complete without it. To quote: "I look at the bugs and think, Why?" Sadly, I'd already finished all but two prints in the edition at that point, and now I feel as though I have ruined everything. Is it too much? Too little? How can I make a positive change? Now to fix it I must do more work? Should I add more color to the bugs? It wouldn't be so difficult if it wasn't a professor whose opinion I respect.

Here is the final print for our Forum class portfolio, 3/4 of the way done. 17x22. Edition of 8. This portfolio contains the Tent Caterpillars and Pest Control Nightmare.

The evolution of this project is as follows:   

   This  is the image that is replacing the "Design by Entomologie" bug-fabric dresses. I am attempting to create a CMYK color separation, but I have some technical challenges with this method, not to mention lack of school supplies such as Photo Emulsion and Transparent base which are constantly running out. In this image the dress looks correct, although I need to redo the black layer. However, registration must be completely accurate for this to work. If you saw the dress close up it looks like a mix of blue and pink, not the green that I was going for.

 

Intervention

 Media Intervention project 3/4 of the way done. Small panels with text to come. Not sure if they will be interspersed between the prints or below/ above. 

"Design by Entomologie" Project postponed

This project was replaced because it was decided that it was visually too different from the other prints to fit into the portfolio for class. Suggestions: wood cut background, paper doll figure behind prints, one or two larger dresses, more abstract & lively

If I were a fashion statement

..Notes to self: Change landscape to  city/abandoned lots. Include series of desirable items decorated with insect patterns (Purse, shoes, earrings/necklace, belt, accessories, either in one piece or as a sidebar/ triptych) Think about: (Existing pattern or new pattern: does my pattern lend itself too well to fashion already, making the connection too seamless and not uncomfortable enough?) Print dress (Create stencils. Fabric ink?).Photograph, featuring "Fashion shoot" style poses.Prints: screen print, woodblock printed areas (gilded?)

Pest Control Nightmare: Feeling itchy...

 First layer printed! Screenprinting ink does not go as far as woodblock ink...I used a lot creating that flat. Here I have only printed 8 (took about an hour) but I will have 15.

Next will come the fleas' bodies, (yellow/brown) my body (dark brown), and then the woodcut (so many layers of brown!). Time to start carving!

(Seriously I really need to start. It's going to take a while).






So planning my flea nightmare has led to MORE nightmares about fleas...they're getting bigger! :-/
